7 Interesting Facts to Consider When Designing Your Website

November 3, 2022

As part of b4b’s web design team, I know what makes a good website... and what doesn’t! That’s why I wanted to share a few interesting (and surprising!) facts to keep in mind when creating a new website.

1) Humans have a seven-second attention span

While a goldfish has a nine-second attention span, a human’s is just seven! This means that an average user will take only half a second to form an initial opinion of a website they’re on. In that time, the user will decide what the website is about and whether or not the content is interesting or relevant enough to keep them engaged.

2) Colour affects user perceptions

Colours can elicit certain feelings or evoke particular connotations. White and pink are often regarded as sincere and pure. Red, orange and yellow bring out energy and excitement. Black shows credibility, strength, power and professionalism. Green is the colour of life, renewal, nature and energy.

Moreover, men and women prefer different colours. Your new cosmetics website targeted at female consumers may lose visitors if you have a more typically “masculine” colour scheme.

3) Prototyping tools build trust

Our web designers understand that involving the client in the process is the key to keeping the project moving effectively towards the desired end goal.

We use prototyping tools such as Figma, which helps us to easily share our designs with the client and get feedback before starting to build.

4) People view your website from the top left corner

The art of reading started from stone tablets, papyrus scrolls, and papers. Today we use digital banners and mobile phones. One thing that’s never changed is how we read. In most cultures, we start reading from the top left, therefore it’s very helpful to design the most important content on your website in an “F” or “Z” pattern.

5) Avoid fancy fonts

It’s true. Users like common, simple fonts that they see all the time. Fancy new fonts distract the user, who will then end up ignoring the content of the website.

6) Big pictures attract more attention

Big and bold photos will grab the attention of your website’s users. Eye-catching images with bold text communicate a message more effectively.

7) Mobile phone users like visuals more than text content

People surfing the web on their mobile don’t always want to spend their time scrolling through loads of text. That’s why it’s helpful to communicate through visual elements, such a big and bold images and video.
