Whilst Magento released their new ecommerce platform, Magento 2, back in 2015, many businesses are still wondering if it’s worth making the switch. Here are 4 reasons that you should consider upgrading from Magento 1 to Magento 2.
More support
Magento has announced that they will continue to provide software support for Magento 1 until June 2020; after that time, no support will be available. This means no more patches, extensions or performance updates while Magento turns its full attention to Magento 2.
This could have a very negative impact on your business, as you’ll eventually be left with an out of date system with no available support to fix the problem should something go wrong. Upgrading to Magento 2 today will put you in a much more secure position moving forwards and won’t leave you at risk.
Better security
As of June 2020, Magento will no longer publish Community and Enterprise 1.x security patches, which will leave your website more vulnerable to hacking and cyber attacks. In addition, as of December 31st 2018, Magento will not be releasing any further server software security updates for Magento 1. By not updating to Magento 2, you may be putting your site and customers’ information at risk.
Faster page loading times
In almost every aspect, Magento 2 operates better than Magento 1, including when it comes to site performance and speed. This means that your customers get a better overall experience when using a Magento 2 website, potentially leading to higher conversion rates and sales.
To put it in perspective, the original version of Magento 1 could only handle a maximum of 200,000 page views per hour. In comparison, Magento 2 can handle 10 million page views in the same time. Magento 2 websites boast page loading speeds 50% faster than that of Magento 1.
Simpler admin interface
The interface of Magento 1 has been called ‘confusing’ and ‘intimidating’ by a number of new users. In addition, the original Magento interface was not designed for mobile. This is no longer the case in Magento 2, which offers a wide range of tools in a way that is much simpler and easier to access for beginners, and speeds up the process of creating product pages for seasoned Magento site pros.
